Free radicals are unstable molecules that are found in the environment and can damage our cells.

A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for our bodies, otherwise, a process called oxidative stress starts to happen which can cause negative effects, like contributing to the aging process.

During intense exercise, free radical production increases and accelerates the body’s cell oxidation. This must be taken care of with an appropriate skin-care routine that will help keep your skin be damage-free. Exposure to air pollution, radiation, and toxins also promote excessive free radical formation.


Free radicals are one the main causes of premature aging



 UV radiation is a type of energy produced by the sun that we cannot personally detect through our senses. This means we are unable to notice skin damage until it has been done.

Some UV exposure is necessary to obtain Vitamin D, which helps us stay healthy, but staying a prolonged time under the sun can cause UV damage, like sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, there are two main types of UV rays:

  • UVA rays: Ages skin cells and damages their DNA.
  • UVB rays: Main cause of sunburn.
They are also thought to cause most skin cancers. There are several preventive measures against UV rays, such as wearing sunscreen of at least SPF 30, wearing a hat, long sleeves, special sunglasses and of course looking out for shade.

Blue light, also known as HEV light, contains the highest amount of energy of the visible light spectrum. Approximately one-third of all visible light is considered blue light.

Most of it comes from sunlight but digital devices, like computers, TV’s and smartphones, also emanate blue light. The issue is that this light is held closer to our faces.

Blue light promotes oxidative stress through the acceleration of free Radicals on the skin. This can contribute to skin aging.

Since blue light has the capacity of penetrating deeper layers of our skin, it can reache where our collagen and elastin are found. Protecting our skin from the broad spectrum with SPF and feeding it with antioxidants can help prevent skin damage.

Sweat is great for the skin as it thermoregulates and purifies our skin from harmful substances, such as bacteria, dirt, oils, and impurities.

On the flip side, some of these impurities are flushed out by sweat and stay on your skin. These are re-absorbed, unbalancing pH levels leading to skin irritation and rashes. During this, skinemies may find an entrance into the skin.

To avoid this kind of damage on the skin, always wash your face before working out, apply sunscreen and cleanse your face shortly after any activity.

Air pollutants are contaminated particles found in the environment like hydrocarbons, ozone, and cigarette smole. These can damage the skin by inducing oxidative stress. 

Although our skin acts as a natural barrier against these pollutants, prolonged and repetitive exposure to high levels of these in our active lives may have negatively profound effects on the skin, such as skin pre-mature aging, pigmentation, acne and skin cancers.
