“You will never understand the power and the beauty of your youth until they’ve faded”
I started using sunscreen not long ago, when I understood how important it was for my health and for my skin. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. There are three principal types of UV light rays that can harm your skin, it’s threatening because they directly affect our DNA’s composition.
Types of UV rays:
UVA: Longer wavelengths with deeper damage, affects the dermis layer.
UVB: Shorter wavelengths that cause skin burn.
We're exposed to sun rays every day, even on cloudy days. I had the misconception that I was only being exposed to the sun when it was blaring over me. UVB rays are mostly blocked by clouds and that’s why we don’t get a sunburn, however, our skin receives UVA rays which can lead to premature aging and skin cancer.
How should we protect our skin from sun damage? I’ll give you some tips:
1. Use sunscreen EVERY DAY.
a. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen to have UVA and UVB protection.
2. Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
3. Choose cosmetics with SPF.
4. NEVER use tanning beds.
5. Always have an SPF product with you, look for “on the go” products.
6. Avoid sunlight exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
7. The use of a hat can block more than 50% of UV rays on your face and eyes.
Have I not convinced you to use sunscreen every day? I’ll give you some facts about the sun.
