We’re in the midst of summer and if you haven’t noticed by now it’s hot, you’re sweaty, and we’re all just trying to survive the warm weather. Something that always comes up around this time of the year is dehydration: “the silent attacker amongst the heat wave”. Now, that may be an overstatement, an exaggeration, if you will, but it's a real problem. It was found that 75% of americans, of 3,003 surveyed, were chronically dehydrated; even though they drank about eight servings of hydrating beverages this was offset because of caffeinated beverages, alcohol, and a high sodium diet.
Dehydration occurs when our body doesn’t have the amount of water it needs because we lose more water than what we intake. This can happen by excessive sweating and other causes like fever, diarrhea, vomiting or peeing a lot. Since it’s summer, and as previously established, it’s hot, our bodies natural reaction to heat is sweating to naturally cool our body temperature down, leading to less fluids. If we don’t replenish the water that is lost, you guessed it, we get dehydrated, and it just all goes full circle.
And who wants to be dehydrated when you’ve got a refreshing pool waiting for you? No one. Sometimes feeling thirsty isn’t the only sign that tells us we’re dehydrated. We can also suffer from a dry, sticky mouth, headaches, muscle cramps, kidney problems, dry skin, sleepiness, and fatigue amongst other symptoms. Doesn’t sound very summer ready, huh?
Good thing there’s an easy way out!
Yes, you probably guessed it, it starts with drinking more water. We all need water. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water, so, as it turns out, it’s fundamental for us to keep ourselves hydrated. Not everyone needs the same amount of water that’s why there never seems to be a consensus on how many cups of water we need to drink each day. It takes knowing yourself to keep yourself hydrated. Here are a few tips you can follow to ensure you are hydrated and healthy for Summer of ‘19!
