Quick and Easy: Homemade Kombucha

It’s kombucha time! If you’re like me, keeping up on the times, then this is probably not the first time you’ve heard of kombucha. Actually, thinking about it, you’ve heard of it many times. If you’ve ever found yourself in a trendy restaurant, wandering around the beverage section in Whole Foods or even just hanging out with your “healthy” friends, you've definitely heard of it.  It’s practically a trending topic! 

So, before your curiosity burns out, what is kombucha? Let's start with the fundamentals. Kombucha is a fermented drink that has been around since ancient times. It’s full of probiotics, antioxidants, vitamins and more. The ingredients used to make it are very common: tea + water + sugar + S.C.O.B.Y. a.k.a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. Don ́t worry, even though the S.C.O.B.Y. may look like a questionable mushroom, its not! This is how it works. The tea and sugar start a fermentation process with the S.C.O.B.Y and after a mere 10 to 15 days you get a bubbly drink chock full of  many health benefits.

Why should you drink kombucha? 

  1. Helps the digestive system: it is rich in probiotics, so when it enters your stomach it starts to break down undigested food helping the digestive processes.
  2. Joint support: contains glucosamines that helps prevent arthritis. 
  3. Energy: it has a little bit of caffeine plus the iron released from the black tea during the fermentation adds to the energy content it supplies. 
  4. Antioxidants: supports healthy cell functions.
  5. Taste: it is delicious and can be mixed with different ingredients such as berries, peach, ginger, mango, apple, pomegranate, grapes or whatever comes to mind! 
  6. Easy and cheap to make: once you have your S.C.O.B.Y. you only need to add some tea and sugar. It’s a pretty low price for a functional, healthy lifestyle. 

How To Prepare It



  • 4 bags of tea 
  • 8 cups of water 
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • S.C.O.B.Y. 


  1. Boil 8 cups of water with 4 bags of green or black tea 
  2. Add sugar and let it cool down 
  3. Pour the tea in a glass jar with the S.C.O.B.Y. (Note: the jar should have a breathable cover)
  4. Wait 10-15 days for it to be ready 
  5. Drink your kombucha!  

Now it´s time for you to enjoy your kombucha and the benefits it comes with! I'll just leave you with this little quote to reflect on today: “In a world full of soda be a kombucha”
